The Marais Poitevin is the second largest wetland after the Carmague.
It covers roughly 110.000 hectares and it spans across 2 regions, which is the Pays de la Loire and Poitou-Charente and 3 counties which are Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sevres and The Vendee.
It is made up of the Bay of Aiguillon, the Dry Marshes and the Wet Marshes.
I just visited Marais Poitevin for the first time in May this year. As we have every year our
our Mariee always treats everybody who helped out over that weekend for a lovely day out and this year it was Marais Poitevin.
Not a bad treat for helping out on something I would do anyway!!!
Unfortunately the weather could have been a bit better as we took a little boat ride and it would have been more enjoyable in some lovely sunshine.
But even so,
is a good day out.
Let me tell you a little bit more about it.
It offers a natural environment that is unique in France. The wooded region is extensively crossed by canals and rivers, and in many parts is best explored by boat - usually 'barques', the flat-bottomed boats, are used. Dinghy and canoe trips are also popular on the quiet waters.
These provide access to the still, green waters, in the shadows of the polars and weeping willows and provide a unique insight into this beautiful region.
This is what we did, hired a ‘barques’ with a guide. It’s easier with a guide as you can just enjoy the whole trip without stirring the boat. Way more enjoyable.
But you can decide if you would like a guide or if you want to do all the work yourself. It is possible to rent these boats from 3/4 of an hour to up to 2 hours. It’s good fun to do if you decide to visit.
The region is known also for its wide range of fauna - from insects to mammals and birds, there is great diversity here.
Herons are one of the birds commonly seen.
A visit to the Natural Reserve at Saint-Denis-du-Payre is a good place to start to learn more about the animal life of the region.
The frogs you see here are often very noisy but hard to spot as they are very small green frogs.
They are a lot of things to do in the Marais Poitevin. You will find Museums there and an Archaeological Cave.
So, either pack a nice picnic or have some lovely lunch in one of the Restaurants there and I am sure you will have a nice day out.
If you go, enjoy yourselves and maybe let me know what you thought about it.
