Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is in the south-east of the Charente department and is situated on the Dronne river, on the South-East border of the Charente region, close to the Dordogne.

If you have children, but it's not nessecary, there is a great Puppet theatre showing stories in english and french.

The theatre is open during July and August and you will find it in the village square next to the tabac. I have been a few times with my children and we always enjoyed it very much.

How about some kayaking on the river Dronne?

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne has a great club where you can learn how to handle your boat or rent one of the boats and discover the Dronne on your own pace.

I actually went for the first time myself last year (2009) with some friends and my family. We just had an absolutley great time.

Of course there was a lot of splashing going on but we did not capsize!!!

We brought a picnic with us and after the great kayaking we took it to a manmade lake right next to the Kayaking centre.

There you can have a little dip to cool down and if you did not bring a picnic there is a snack-bar where you can get drinks and food.

There are more things to do, like visiting a Pottery, Jewellery shops, Antique shops and a lovely wooden toy shop. On Sunday morning there is usually a market on the Square where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. But you will have to be an early riser, as it starts early and is finished by midday.

Now you spend quite a bit of time in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne you can decide to maybe go back to your holiday home or stay here for some dinner.

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is a fantastic village in the summer to have drinks and dinner, because when you walk down the hill from the car park you get to the village square called Place Ludovic Trarieux. You can get nicely settled in the square and soak up the atmosphere.

Once you are on the square you are surrounded by Restaurants and some small shops. In the the summer heat it is lovely and shaded as they are many trees.

Place Ludovic Trarieux or called the Square

On the actual square you will find 3 Restaurants and they all serve a different cuisine.

Of course there is the 'Hotel de France', which you can find in every village.

It has ' a la carte' or the 'Menu of the day'. When we go there one of us always chooses the 'menu of the day' and it has never been dissapointing.

'A la carte' has choices of salads, omelettes, steak and fish, so a wide variety and of course it has a childrens menu.

On a Friday evening 'Hotel de France' has 'happy hour' starting at 6o'clock.

You can start your evening with a nice relaxing drink and maybe move on for dinner to one of the other Restaurants.

Or how about a bit of Italien?

The Restaurent is called 'Creperie Sel et Sucre' and actually it does not sound quite italien but the food is very good if you enjoy Pasta and Pizza.

And for your dessert you can have one of their mean crepes.

They are excellent and you have plenty of toppings to choose from, but I must admit I never tried anything else but the chocolat one.

Maybe you will be more adventures then me!!!

And then there is Restaurant Bodega Paseo del Sol which is going the spanish/basque direction.

You get some great tapas in there.

The previous owner used to be Sid Owen (Ricky from Eastenders) but it was called Albeterra then.

There is a bit of glitz for you.....

If you should be a big group I would recommend to book a table so they will be prepared.

We went there once with a big group and there was quite a bit of confusion going on in the kitchen as they did not expect that many people and it took a long time for the food to arrive. But once it was there it was good.

Now they are actually some more Restaurants in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne but I have not tried them so I would not like to write anything.
